Public space designer
We are KTM Design, a team of innovative outdoor space designers who are dedicated to designing public areas that bring the community together.
From a plaza to a shopping centre, public spaces should be innovative to entice both visitors and locals to the area and practical to and allow large numbers of people to enjoy a space comfortably. Our outdoor space designers have the creative eye and experience it takes to ensure you get the most out of a space, whether that be a casual spot on the high street or a more formal public area which is used to host events.
Although our interior design studios are based in Bournemouth and London, we can provide our public space design services outside of these areas to bring your outdoor design project to life.

Public Space Design Process
Step 1:
Design brief
Firstly, we’ll visit the public space to understand how it comes together and what can be done to transform the area.
Step 2:
Concept design
We’ll create an initial design plan based on the brief, including 3D models of how the outdoor space will look following construction.
Step 3:
Design development
We’ll refine the layout, taking into account economic, environmental and construction needs.
Step 4:
Technical design
We create a fully-detailed technical construction pack, including finish schedules.
Step 5:
Construction
Construction will begin and we’ll work closely with the contractors to ensure that the work carried out is following the design plan throughout the process.
Step 6:
Handover and closeout
Following construction, we'll visit the site to assess whether any further work is needed in order to fulfil the brief - the project will not come to a close until both ourselves and the client are happy with the end result.

How to design public spaces
When designing a public space, there are a few things to consider:
Is the area accessible? It’s important to ensure that you design an outdoor space with accessibility in mind so that all members of the public have equal access to the area.
Is the space easily adaptable? It’s always good to think ahead and designing a space which can be further enhanced in the future will allow the area to evolve with any changes in the area such as new developments.
Which materials will work best in the area? It’s important to think about the sustainability of the project as well as its appearance so that it can be a multi-functional space with an attractive design, but also has the impact on the environment in mind.
Have the needs and opinions of the public at heart - at the end of the day, the space is designed for public use, so it can be a good idea to firstly gather the public’s thoughts on what they’d like a new space to offer them and considering the community’s needs.
What is public space design?
Public space design involves the designing of public spaces (areas in the public which are open for public use or for recreational purposes, such as parks, plazas, streets and shopping centres). Public space design and architecture is often undertaken as a means of connecting the public (whether they are local or visiting the area) and creating a greater sense of community. It is also a great way of offering a visual pause in crowded places such as cities with lots of buildings, which is why it’s important to have innovation in mind whilst planning to ensure the new outdoor space will have high impact.
